At Dorset Neuro Physio we can help if you have dizziness, vertigo and imbalance. We understand that these symptoms can impact upon your everyday life.

We will complete specialist tests to diagnose your problem, provide treatment and exercises.

Common conditions that we treat are:

  • BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis
  • Vestibular migraine
  • Age associated changes

An assessment, called the Dix-Hallpike Test can diagnose this particular problem and if positive, an Epley Manoeuvre is undertaken which often resolves the problem immediately.

What is vestibular rehabilitation?

Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based programme that aims to reduce dizziness and imbalance. It works by desensitising the system to the feeling of dizziness and recalibrating information from the inner ears.

From the assessment your therapist will provide an individualised rehabilitation programme which may include eye exercises, balance re-training and education.

The Vestibular System

The vestibular system plays an important role in our ability to balance and control our eye and head movements. It is made up of the balance organs of the inner ear and areas in the brain which process this information.  When the vestibular system does not work properly it can cause a host of unpleasant and distressing symptoms including vertigo, dizziness and visual disturbances.

Benign Paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

One of the most common causes of vertigo and dizziness is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BBPV).  The dizziness is often associated with a certain position or movement, e.g. turning in bed, getting out of bed, reaching up to a cupboard, reversing the car and usually only lasts for a short while (5-20 seconds).
